As Neon Takes the Night

Velovution. .

The cycling revolution (or velovution) has been growing at unprecedented speed in the last few months, and with so much media attention, the emphasis has turned on the cycle-chic movement.

It seems that everyone wants in on the game, Urban Outfitters has even gone so far as to stock a selection of chic Nutcases for women on their website. The world has gone bicycle mad and the focus is moving away from lycra and racers to vintage dutch style bicycles with deep wicker baskets and ditsy summer dresses. The Summer 2010 edition  of Evans Cycles magazine not only address the cycle chic style, but actually featured it on the front cover: a copper coloured Charge Lazy Susan bicycle, a Dahlia dress, wind in the hair… the new look of cycling revealed.

So who have we got to thank for this renewed interest? Could it be Boris Johnson’s promotion of cycling in London? Or the designer bikes sporting names such as Fendi or Chanel, and celebrity parents driving their children to school in Trikidoo tricycles. Emily Blunt’s latest film, Wild Target opened with a long sequence in which she cycled through Trafalgar Square and into the National Gallery on a vintage style bicycle while Regina Spektor sings in the background.

Needless to say the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme has made cycling endlessly more accessible – meaning that the masses can now trade four wheels for two without having to commit to their own bicycle or have to worry about the costs of maintenance, storage, or even an initial purchase. But honestly, nothing quite beats the thought of a a Dutchie, or a Pashley Poppy (although my personal favourite is the Sonnet Pure)…

School Daze

Remember Ambreal Williams from cycle 9 of ANTM? I stumbled across this lovely hazy photoshoot for Mwari Magazine featuring soft feminine fashion and, what had originally caught my eye, some beautiful vintage bicycles.
